Understanding Your Online Security
The Use of Encryption
Encryption is a means by which data transmitted over the Internet is “scrambled” in a way that makes it unreadable to everyone except the recipient. Encryption is applied in online banking as a strict form of security. First Commonwealth uses 128-bit encryption, which is the strongest form of encryption in the industry today. Our online banking solutions only permit the use of an Internet browser (such as Netscape Navigator® or Microsoft® Internet Explorer) that will support 128-bit encryption.
Online Banking and Timing Out
First Commonwealth also uses a “timing out” feature to help ensure your online security. Timing out occurs when a user forgets to logoff during an online banking session. After a brief period of inactivity, our system will automatically log you off thus protecting any future unauthorized attempts into your account information. However, to fully ensure immediate and proper protection, we highly suggest you always logoff when you complete your Internet banking or Internet bill payment session.
Firewall Protection
The application of a firewall system is common in today’s banking industry and at First Commonwealth. A firewall is a set of programs residing on a computer server that protect the resources of an internal network. Simply put, the firewall does not allow any unauthorized intrusions to occur to the bank’s protected Internet banking network.
Further Protecting Yourself
The following are ways by which you can help protect yourself and your online security.
- Remember the username and password you select. Don’t write it down or share it with anyone, including family members or close friends.
- We suggest you change your password frequently. This can easily be done online or by calling 1-800-711-BANK (2265). Select passwords that are unique and not common such as birthdays, anniversaries, favorite numbers, etc.
- Avoid sending sensitive information, such as account numbers, through unsecured e-mail.
- First Commonwealth will never request bank account numbers, social security numbers or other sensitive information via e-mail.
- Because of certain computer viruses that exist which record keystroke information, we do not recommend the use of public terminals to access your banking accounts.
- Never leave your computer unattended while banking online. If you leave your computer, always logoff your online banking session. Be aware of your surroundings!
- If you think someone may have obtained your confidential password or access information, contact us immediately at 1-800-711-BANK (2265).
Make sure you are aware of your responsibilities as an online banking user. Your responsibilities are outlined in the Terms and Conditions section of both our WebBank and BillPay solutions.
