Fraud Alert: Card Scam Targeted at Pennsylvania Banking Customers (September 2009)Information has been recently obtained regarding a confirmed card scam directed at banking customers throughout the state. This scam has been targeted at customers of various banks and credit unions within Pennsylvania In most reported instances a call is placed to a cardholder’s cell phone. The caller ID that appears on the phone is “201”. An automated voice system states that the cardholder’s debit card has been “deactivated”. In order to “reactivate” the card the cardholder is asked to provide confidential information including their card number, expiration date and personal identification number (PIN). Once the fraudsters have this information they can use it to create counterfeit plastics and potentially compromise cardholder’s accounts. Customers should always use their best discretion when providing card information or any form of personal account information over the telephone. Always take the time to appropriately validate the legitimacy of all such requests. When in doubt do not provide any information. If you feel that your information may have been compromised please contact us as soon as possible at 1-800-711-2265. |
