Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a federal student loan, you must

• Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
• Be accepted for enrollment in a participating college, university or trade school
• If already enrolled, you must be making satisfactory progress
• Be classified as at least a half-time student and working toward a degree or certificate
• Have completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid for the appropriate academic year
• Not be in default on an educational loan or owe any education grant refund
• Be registered with the Selective Service, if required
• Demonstrate "Financial Need"* if you're applying for a subsidized Stafford Loan

*Financial Need is defined as The Total Cost of Your Education (tuition, room and board, books, personal student expenses) minus Other Financial Aid (grants, scholarships, work-study, other loans) minus Expected Family Contribution (how much of your family's finances should be available to pay for your education costs).
